KUCHING: The Sarawak branch of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) respects Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s views on the importance of English and that it can be used in official government correspondence.
State DBP director Dr Hazami Jahari said this did not jeopardise the national language policy.
“In this global ICT era, we must be proficient in both languages. Bahasa Malaysia is our national language and it is entrenched in the Federal Constitution,” he said during a courtesy call from Siva Kumar G, the author of “Taib – The Visionary”, recently.
Hazami said he agreed with the steps taken by Adenan, including his announcement that English could be used in official correspondence with the state government.
During the courtesy call, Siva presented Hazami with a VIP edition of a biography of former chief minister Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is now Sarawak Governor.
Also present was writer Saiee Dris, who has been picked to translate the book into Bahasa Malay-sia.
The book captures Taib’s life and times, highlighting his career and achievements as the chief minister for 33 years.
It is available at RM99.90 in Sarawak and Sabah and RM120 in peninsular Malaysia.
