A total of 100 student volunteers will participate in the first Malaysia Students Volunteer Foundation-Asean (YSS-Asean) mission this year to Sarawak for two weeks from today.

Students from Asean member countries, namely one each from Cambodia and Brunei, will join the mission, being organised by YSS.

YSS chairman Datuk Zuraidah Atan said they would carry out various community projects in Kampung Batang Maro, Kabong; Nanga Nyimoh and Nanga Telamat in Song district throughout their stay in Sarawak.

“The student volunteers will also help through community service such as clean water filter installation and construction project in the villages concerned besides repairing the plumbing system and others," she told the media in Putrajaya.

The 2016 YSS-Asean student volunteers’ mission to Sarawak flag-off was officiated by Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching at the ministry's grounds in Putrajaya.

Zuraidah said the volunteers would also carry out educational and teaching programmes at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Batang Maro; SK Nanga Nyimoh and SK Nanga Telamat.

Yap said such a programme could produce undergraduates who had the leadership capabilities and ability in various fields.

As such she urged the student volunteers to share their experience so that others could gain knowledge. – Bernama
