THE iconic Komtar is set to undergo a RM40mil major facelift this year to restore its shine after 30 years.
Penang Development Corporation Setia Urus chief executive officer Datuk Ang Choo Hong said Phase One would include upgrading the tower and podium while Phase Two involved the area occupied by Pacific Komtar departmental store.
“The first phase will see the replacement of the window rubber gaskets and sealants at the tower.
“We’ll also repair the vacuum circuit breakers panel and transformer, install a high voltage system (chiller plant) and upgrade the podium’s main alarm panel and CCTV system.
“We’ve also received complaints about water leakage which we will also rectify,” he said at a briefing on Friday.
Ang said that in Phase Two, they would upgrade the 1,000TR cooling tower, the chiller components, 29 air curtains, 20 air handling units, three lifts and 12 escalators.
He said they spent about RM20.7mil on expenses including electricity bills, cleaning and wages last year.
“This year, we expect our expenses to be about RM20mil.
“Adding that to the cost of the RM40mil refurbishment, the total will come to about RM60mil.
“The refurbishment project was supposed to be done four or five years ago,” said Ang.
The construction of the 65-storey Komtar, which is the tallest building in Penang, was completed in 1986.
