KUCHING: The Immigration Department detained 37 illegal immigrants during several operations in Kuching and Kota Samarahan over the past week.
Last Saturday, enforcement personnel carried out checks on 82 foreign workers at a construction site in Taman Malihah Jaya here and arrested 31 Indonesian men.
Nine were detained under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act for failing to produce valid travel documents and the rest under Section 15(1)(c) for overstaying.
Another operation on Monday led to the arrests of six Indonesian men at Sungai Moyan and Jalan Matang Malihah. Four of them were suspected of abusing their Social Visit Pass while one did not have valid travel documents and another had overstayed.
“This is a good start for the department as we enter 2016. We are committed to tackle the problem of illegal immigrants and will continue to step up our operations throughout Sarawak,” state immigration enforcement head Garry Belayong John Siki said in a statement.
All the detainees were brought to the immigration depot at Semuja, Serian, for further investigations.
Meanwhile in Sibu, enforcement personnel inspected roadside hawkers in Jalan Empawah on Tuesday and detained an Indonesian woman for abusing her Social Visit Pass.
She was sent to the Sungai Merah police station for further investigations.
In Bintulu, Immigration officers inspected 40 people on Wednesday, comprising nine locals, 28 Indonesians, two Chinese nationals and one Filipino.
Three Indonesian men were detained for not having valid travel documents and two more for overstaying, while the Filipino was picked up for abusing his Social Visit Pass.
They are being held at the immigration depot at Bekenu, Miri.
An Indonesian man was also detained in Miri for overstaying during raids on six entertainment outlets in the city on Tuesday.
