MIRI: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing says a representative cannot serve his constituent effectively if he only jets in and out of his constituency using helicopter.
He said to be an effective, the assemblyman was required to be “on the ground”.
“The wakil rakyat must set foot and visit them (residents) regularly to understand and see to their needs,” he told the Long Merigam Lapok community during his visit to the Marudi state constituency yesterday.
“How can he feel the problems of the rakyat if he only flies in and out and only visits during election time? He will not know the realities on the ground.”
Tiong said that was the reason why he visited his constituency as MP of Bintulu regularly on wheels, boats and on foot.
“I only use helis when I am short of time,” he said.
Tiong said that SPDP was glad to see that many Marudi folk were in favour of SPDP fielding Dr Penguang Mangil in the Marudi seat in the coming state polls.
The incumbent Marudi assemblyman is Datuk Sylvester Entri of Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras).
Tiong said his party would cooperate with the other BN components to make sure SPDP win Marudi to bring progress to the place.
