SIBU: The completion of the new RM39mil indoor stadium by mid-March will enable badminton and volleyball be held here during Sukma.
The stadium, located at the old airport site, would be ready by March 27, according to Public Works Department head for central region John Aten.
“Construction works are now at 66.40% which is slightly behind the original schedule,” he during a briefing to Local Government and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh yesterday.
John said the delay was due to the longer time taken to ship in the roofing material from South Korea.
Work on the stadium begun on March 19, 2014.
John said the stadium would have 10 badminton, one basketball court and two volleyball courts, including a seating capacity for 4,250 people.
He said there would be 479 parking bays for cars, 89 for motorcycles and 16 for coaches.
Two jogging tracks for athletes to warm up would be available.
Meanwhile, Wong said the contractor, Woodville Sdn Bhd, had requested that an Olympic-size swimming pool be added to the facility to make it into an integrated sport centre.
“This is subject to the approval of the state government and I will bring it up to the Chief Minister,” he added.
A total of 24 sports will be competed at the 18th Sukma from July 22 to 31.
