MALACCA: The volume of Singaporean tourists flocking to Malacca is overwhelming, making it one of the five top tourism generating areas in the Unesco Heritage City.

Out of the total 12.2 million international tourists who visited Malacca in 2015, 1.1 million or 31.27% were tourists from Singapore, followed by 711,800 from China, Indonesia (484,738), Taiwan (121,799) and 100,462 visitors from Japan.

The southern neighbours made up the biggest number of foreign tourists to holiday in Malacca throughout 2015.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said Malacca attracted a large number of tourists, with the majority coming from Asian nations.

“Most of them also come here to savour the wide range of food available,” he said after attending a preview on Miss Tourism World 2016 at Swiss Garden City Hotel here on Wednesday.

He revealed that tourist arrivals increased by 144,452 or 20.1% in 2015 compared to the 12 million tourists during the same corresponding period in 2014.

Idris said for the domestic tourists segment, 1.3 million locals toured Malacca in 2015 where Selangor accounted for 13.84% of the total visitors during the year while those from Kuala Lumpur made up 13.84%, followed by 11.9% from Johor.

He said as one of the world’s leading employment sectors, tourism provides important livelihood opportunities for the locals.

“As such, we have to give importance to our tourism sector, especially by being friendly and keeping the environment clean,” he said.

In an unrelated development, Idris announced that the national-level Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration will be held in Malacca.

Malacca also just hosted the national-level Christmas Open House on Dec 27, last year.

It was a feather in the cap for the local tourism industry when the Tourism and Culture Ministry chose the historic city as the venue for the open house.

Idris added that the venue and other details of the CNY event will be announced in due time.
