KUCHING: The inaugural Kuching Heritage Race next month offers participants a fun opportunity to discover the city’s heritage and do their part for charity.
Organised by the Kuching Heritage Committee, the race’s main objective is to renew residents’ interest and appreciation for their city.
“Kuching is a multi-cultural city with a long history that includes sultans, tribal chiefs, Chinese and Indian traders, White Rajahs, Japanese occupation, Australian liberation and time as a British colony.
“We want people to get excited about their own heritage and rekindle their love for the city, which all too often we take for granted,” organising chairman Philip Yong said.
He said proceeds from the event will go towards Meeting Needs, a local charity assisting under-privileged families with special needs children.
“We aim to raise at least RM20,000, mainly from sponsors, for Meeting Needs,” he added.
The race, to be held on Jan 30, is a team event of two to six members each.
Teams will race through the city centre, testing their knowledge of Kuching by answering questions and carrying out heritage-related activities based on clues given.
“We are crafting an interesting 3km route for the race. This will be an educational experience for participants, who will get to see Kuching through new eyes and discover parts of the city they did not know about before.
“We want to raise appreciation not only of Kuching’s built heritage but also its material and cultural heritage,” Yong said, adding that it would also be a fun event for families to take part in together.
Teams who successfully complete the tasks and answer questions correctly within the time limit stand a chance to win cash prizes.
There will also be prizes for a few other categories such as best dressed team, best team spirit and best photograph.
The race is open to everyone with a maximum number of 200 participants on a first-come-first-served basis.
Those interested can register online at www.kuchingheritage.com with a fee of RM50 per person.
