WITH beads of sweat trickling down his face, Abdul Mazin Abdul Jamil forges a piece of heated metal before him, hammering repeatedly without a care for the sweltering temperature or tiring.

The 65-year-old keris maker continues doing so until the piece of metal, made up of alternating layers of metal taken from seven items, forms a wavy double-edged dagger.
