THE Malaysia Hindu Sangam’s Butterworth council hosted a Deepavali gathering for 225 underprivileged children from seven charity homes at Dewan Sree Maha Mariamman, Jalan Mengkuang in Butterworth.
The children, aged between three and 16, enjoyed the various types of food while watching song and dance performances.
They were from the Arutjyothi Vallalar Mandram in Sungai Petani, Gurunathar Ashram in Bedong, Batu Grace Ashram and Sunshine Cottage Welfare Society in Kulim, Sinar Cahaya in Bukit Mertajam, Shan Children’s Home in Butterworth and Seri Cahaya Welfare Home in Batu Maung.
Council chairman K. Shanmuganathan said they had been giving needy children a Deepavali treat for the last 19 years.
He said the event this year was more challenging to organise as prices of things had gone up.
“We are thankful to so many donors who chipped in,” he said during the recent gathering.
All the children were given goodie bags and cash.
Also present was Bagan Dalam assemblyman A. Tanasekharan.
