A FLOOD retention pond located at the junction of Ligamas in Batang Kali is not serving its purpose as the surrounding areas are still hit by floods.
On Nov 20, water from the nearby Sungai Batang Kali spilled over to the Batang Kali-Hulu Yam Bharu road making it impassable, with water reaching 1m high.
Batang Kali assemblyman Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan, who visited the site, said the retention pond was located on higher ground compared to its surrounding areas.
“The pond is dry even during a downpour.
“Residents in the surrounding villages have to endure constant floods during heavy rain.
“The Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) should deepen the pond so that water can be channelled here when there is a flash flood’’ said Mat Nadzari.
Mohd Zin Sarip, 57, from Kampung Ulu Rening, said he finds it difficult to come out of his village during a flood.
“We live in fear during the monsoon season especially when we see dark clouds over our houses.
“The retention pond is of no use and the area should be made into a carpark,” said Mohd Zin.
Mustapa Mat Yasin, 64, from Kampung Sentosa, Batang Kali, said the water can sometimes reach 2m high.
“I hope the authorities will stop making empty promises and solve the flooding problem in Batang Kali and nearby villages once and for all,’’ he said.
MDHS corporate communications officer Junainah Abdullah said the retention pond was still under the developer.
“We agree the retention pond here is located higher than the road and surrounding areas and does not serve its purpose.
“We will hold a meeting with the developer soon to ensure the retention pond is functioning as it should,’’ she said.
Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB) Fire and Rescue Department chief Kamil Hamadan agreed that Batang Kali is a flood-prone area.
He added that Bandar Baru Ligamas, Batang Kali town, Kampung Rantau Panjang and Kampung Sentosa are among the flood hotspots in Hulu Selangor.
“We are always on high alert when flash floods happen in the area,” said Kamil.
