THE national language is an effective tool to bring Malaysia’s multiracial society together, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
He said the national language would also help enhance patriotism.
“In this context, the usage of one language, which is Bahasa Malaysia as enshrined in Article 152 of the Federal Constitution, is an effective tool to unite the various races in the country,” he said.
“Therefore, the Government will continue promoting racial unity through the national language and encourage its wide usage,” Mahdzir added.
He said this at the launch of the national-level National Language Month at Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Setar, Kedah, recently.
His speech was read out by Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan.
He said that in a pluralistic country like Malaysia, understanding, tolerance and openness in accepting Bahasa Malaysia as the national language were something that one should admire.
He also said the muhibbah spirit among Malaysians was a strength that must be preserved forever to ensure stability and harmony of the country.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir launched the event.
State secretary Datuk Mohd Puat Mohd Ali, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) chairman Prof Datuk Seri Dr Md Salleh Yaapar and DBP director-general Datuk Dr Awang Sariyan were also present.
