WIVES of the country's leaders should exercise discretion and maturity when dealing with information from the social media, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor said.
Rosmah also urged members of the Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) to first find out if there was any truth to such information.
The president of Bakti said they should also help to correct the false or inaccurate information disseminated to the public.
“We, too, can reach out to the people and counter the lies that are spread on social media, not just our husbands.
“We can also be effective intermediaries between the Government and the people by being a credible source of information on the Government's various policies and efforts," she said during the opening of the Wives of Barisan Nasional Elected Representatives Annual Programme in Ipoh on Thursday.
According to Rosmah, the social media should bring good to the people and not be used as a tool to spread lies or confuse the people, especially the younger generation.
The annual meet this year was kicked off with a forum entitled 'Social Media: Advantages or Disadvantages' in which it was concluded that the social media does bring about more advantages.
“Despite that, one of the top 10 issues that the entire world has to grapple with when it comes to the social media is the misinformation that is created along with it.
“Although only 20% of social media users have been found to spread false information and lies, it is believed to be able to cause a negative impact on the rest of the users.
“More worrisome is the widespread use of information technology as a means to spread lies, which not only creates confusion, anger and hatred among the people but can also jeopardise the credibility of victims of slander,” she said.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who opened the five-day meet attended by 536 participants from 14 states, said others should emulate Bakti's efforts to strengthen unity and organise programmes that benefit the people.
"Apart from organising sports activities, Bakti also holds programmes, such as intellectual discourses on current issues, which can impact the public positively.
"What Bakti does for the people should inspire the younger generation," said Ahmad Zahid, who praised Rosmah for her commitment, role and duty in the organisation.
