Cool gadget: Samsung promoters showing off the new Galaxy Note5 at the roadshow in Gurney Plaza, Penang.

SAMSUNG device fans sacrificed a night’s sleep to be among the first in Penang to own the newly released Galaxy Note5.

Many queued overnight at Gurney Plaza to earn golden tickets which entitled them to purchase a second Note5 at 50% off, at a roadshow which started yesterday.

Only the first 50 could enjoy the early bird deal, and at the very front was manager C.C. Ng, who got a worker to stand in line since 9pm on Thursday.

Ng turned up to relieve him and claim his spot an hour before the doors opened, and was pleased to be the first to buy the gadget.

“I’m a long-time user of the Note series. I like its performance and aesthetics,” the 38-year-old said, adding that he would split the second device and the overall cost with a friend.

Just behind him was interior designer K.T. Tan, 40, who personally waited since midnight. He was upgrading from an earlier Note model.

“The wait was tough, but I managed to rough it out by watching movies on my tablet and catching some sleep in between.

“My wife’s birthday is coming up later this month, so the second phone is for her,” he added.

The event was held simultaneously in Sunway Pyramid, Selangor, and Sutera Mall in Johor Baru,

Besides promoting the Note5, the roadshow also marked the Malaysian debut of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge+.

Both devices represent the tech giant’s continuous commitment to the big screen smartphone market, which it pioneered in 2011 with the original Galaxy Note.

Additionally, those who buy any of the two new devices at the roadshows will also be rewarded with a free 11,300mAH battery pack and wireless charger (worth up to RM538). It is valid while stocks last.

Samsung is also holding a trade-up campaign where users can trade in their old smartphones for the Note5, and stand to receive up to RM1,150 in discount (value depends on model, and subject to assessment).

Samsung Malaysia Electronics public relations manager for corporate marketing Jesss How said the perks are a way of thanking their loyal customer base.

“Penangites have been great supporters over the years, and we wanted to reward them,” she added.

There are also free accessories for purchases of the Galaxy S6 Edge, S6, A8, A7, Tab S2 and Tab A models.

The roadshow at Gurney Plaza’s main atrium continues until tomorrow.
