SIBU: The spirit of patriotism is best manifested at the central market here as it is dotted with the state and national flags.
The two types of flags, numbering 200 of them, are put on all sides of the market in conjunction with the National Day and Malaysia Day celebration which falls on Sept 16.
Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King had on Saturday presented 150 of the flags to the three hawkers associations – the Sibu Hawkers Welfare Association, United Sibu-Meradong Hawkers Association and Sibu Petty Traders Association.
Sibu Hawkers Welfare Association chairman Tan Hong Kiang received the flags on behalf of the three associations who would help to put them up in the market.
Speaking to reporters later, Tiong said urged the people to do the same by hanging up flags in their business premises or houses.
“The two days are an important days for all of us. We are a country blessed with religious freedom. Hanging or putting up flags shows our patriotism spirit to our country,” he added.
Tiong said flags also helped to brighten up a particular place.
“Since there are flags of various sizes, people now do not have to spend heavily buying them,” he said. – By ANDY CHUA
