In conjunction with World Breastfeeding Month in August, The Breastfeeding Advocates Network (TBAN) unveiled the first BFriendly Breastfeeding Awareness Video at the Gift of Love Charity Event organised by TBAN in Subang Parade.
The video was unveiled after the TBAN Big Latch where 300 mothers gathered to breastfeed together as a symbolic support to normalise breastfeeding in our society.
The ceremony was launched by Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh and World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (Waba) chairman emiritus Datuk Dr Anwar Fazal together with the four TBAN administrators, Gina Yong, Ashley Ho, Daphne Lee and Felicia Suah.
The Gift of Love Charity Bazaar was a two-day event held last weekend to raise funds for the production of the BFriendly video, other breastfeeding promotions and activities for the Malaysian community.
The objective of the video is to raise awareness that anyone and everyone around a breastfeeding mother can easily provide support in their small ways to smoothen her breastfeeding journey.
The video challenges the audience to think of the many ways they can offer support to breastfeeding mothers.
The video project is produced by BFriendly Team with TBAN’s funding, which is made up of a group of like-minded mothers, passionate about breastfeeding.
This volunteer project was spearheaded by Ayuni Zainuddin in 2013, after representing Malaysia in The World Breastfeeding Conference in New Delhi, India.
Once home, she was highly inspired and motivated to do something to give back to the community.
She roped in Yong, HauYi, Lee-Yang and Suah, the four TBAN administrators, together with Connie Goh and Eva Liew.
All are mothers who have breastfed and still breastfeeding their children. They all met in TBAN, a Facebook support group to help breastfeeding mums. They became friends and have worked together on a few breastfeeding-related volunteer projects like the KLCC Flash Mob in 2012 and breaking the Malaysia Book of Records for Most Number of Mothers Breastfeeding Simultaneously in 2013.
Together they formed the BFriendly Team and decided to produce a video. They chose a video that year as there were not many videos to promote breastfeeding awareness due to the high budget involved.
How did seven mothers (mostly stay-at-home mums) produce a video with no funding? After almost three years of gruelling efforts such as doing market survey, engaging agencies and raising funds via crowd funding in Indiegogo and TBAN’s The Gift of Love Charity Bazaar, the BFriendly Team finally got the video out ahead of its targeted deadline.
Ayuni hopes this project will spur others to champion more campaigns to promote breastfeeding awareness.
“We hope other advocates will be empowered to carry on breastfeeding work in the mass media to ensure that mothers and families know support is just around the corner”.
“Breastfeeding is everybody’s business. It takes a village to raise a child, and it should start with the encouragement and support to breastfeed,” says Yong.
She hopes that younger generation parents will see breastfeeding as the most natural choice for their babies.
The 30-second video depicts three mothers who receive support in different forms that make their breastfeeding journey easier.
One is a young mother, Grace with a supportive husband who changes his working arrangements, helps with the washing of the breastpump equipment to give her more time to rest.
While her father-in-law constantly gives encouragement and even ensures his daughter-in-law eats well when her hands are occupied with breastfeeding the three-month-old baby.
Another mother, Priscilla tells her story of having a full-time office job does not deter her from providing expressed breastmilk for her baby at home. Her company provides a nursing room for breastfeeding mothers like her to express milk in a comfortable and hygienic environment.
A manager of a multinational company then speaks about the reason his company has such immense support for breastfeeding mothers.
The last mother, Izdihar, shares her story on how she nurses her baby in public places like restaurants while an F&B business owner speaks of how and why he encourages mothers to exercise their natural right to breastfeed.
All the characters in the video represent a wide spectrum of our society and they display, in their own capacity, how they too can help the mothers to have a better breastfeeding experience.

TBAN is an online Breastfeeding support group on Facebook.
The group’s aim is to educate modern parents on breastfeeding and to normalise breastfeeding in our society.
Mothers and fathers receive help and support in the group to breastfeed their babies. .
Parents also get immediate answers to their SOS on the wall 24hours a day. When the need arises they can seek personalised counselling help from qualified breastfeeding peer counselors as well.
