Call to appoint locals as district police chiefs

Clarion call: Yek (ninth from left) with his members asking for all police stations be led by Sarawakians.

SIBU: SUPP Bawang Assan Youth Wing wants Sarawakians be appointed as district police chiefs.

Its chairman, Councillor Marcus Yek, said in a press statement that only local people understood the situation in the state better.

Currently most district police chiefs in the state are from west Malaysia, a thing which has being in practice long time ago.

“Locals will understand our culture better as our situation here is very different from west Malaysia as we have many ethnic groups,” he said.

Yek also hoped that the counter to receive report at police stations in the state would be manned also by different races.

“As it is now there are still a lot of people, especially the elderlies, who do not communicate in Bahasa Malaysia. So it is wise to have Chinese or Iban police personnels at the counter,” he said.
