MORE than 20,000 people turned up for Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir’s Hari Raya open house at his official residence in Seri Mentaloon in Alor Setar.
Mukhriz, along with his wife Toh Puan Norzieta Zakaria and four children, mingled with the huge crowd during the four-hour affair which started at 11am on Thursday.
State executive councillors and assemblymen were also present to socialise with the guests.
Caterers quickly rushed to erect huge tents to accommodate the turnout which was bigger than expected and also rushed to prepare more food.
The visitors tucked into tasty traditional Malay dishes such as gulai daging, ayam goreng berempah, laksa Telok Kechai, satay and mee hoon sup.
Kombo Seri Halimi played instrumental numbers to entertain the crowd.
Dancers from Badan Kesenian Negeri Kedah and veteran singers including Datuk Ramli Sarip, Datuk Jamal Abdillah and Salamiah Hassan also performed.
Children quickly made a beeline for Mukhriz and Nozieta when the couple handed out duit raya.
Long lines also formed when it was the turn of the state exco members to hand out the green packets.
Excitement went up many notches when Mukhriz’s parents Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali showed up at about 2pm.
Without any prompting, the awestruck crowd immediately formed a line to greet the former premier, with hundreds askingfor photo opportunities with Dr Mahathir.
Dr Siti Hasmah also had her fair share of admirers, meeting them with Norzieta by her side.
