CM brings some gifts during second visit to bedridden grandma

Pleasant surprise: Idris having a chat with Tan at her home. Looking on are Mohd Zahiruddin (right) and Anderson.

MALACCA: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron spent the last day of Ramadan with bedridden grandmother Tan Lay Har.

Idris was supposed to spend the day with family members in Asahan, Jasin but instead decided to spend an hour with 62-year-old Tan at her home in Taman Bukit Serindit here on Thursday.

Idris also handed over an LCD television set and reclining air mattresses pledged by Hard Rock Malacca general manager Anderson K.Selva and Mahkota Parade leasing and marketing manager Mohd Zahiruddin Ahmad respectively.

Her daughter Ho Siok Mei, 34, said they were surprised to receive a visit from the CM.

When met, Idris said he just wanted to remember the significance of Hari Raya Aidilfitri with Tan who has been bedridden for 30 years.

“My heart is always with Amah (Tan) since I visited her in May.

“We are lucky that the Almighty has given us the blessing of being healthy while Amah has been suffering for three decades.

“I want my children to see that money and fame are only temporary in this world and on Hari Raya, we must learn to appreciate what God has given to us,” he said.

A paralysed Tan was a victim of loan sharks after her gambler son failed to settle his debts.

Her face was covered with red paint after loan sharks attacked her while she was home alone in May.

This is not the first time the CM has visited Tan as he also fulfilled her Mothers Day earlier this year.

He had then advised her daughter not to leave the old woman alone and ordered the police to ensure Tan would no longer be harassed.

Ho said her mother was adamant about living in her ancestral home despite Idris’ offer to resettle her in a nursing home.

Tan was almost in tears when Idris and his family members greeted her with Selamat Hari Raya.“Thank you all. I don’t have anything to repay the Chief Minister except to wish him a good and prosperous life,” she said.

Tan, who was paralysed after a road accident in 1985, still lives alone.
