THREE renowned compositions by Schubert, Eybler and Dvorak will be presented by the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra tomorrow at Dewan Sri Pinang.
Guest conductor Datuk Seri Ooi Chean See will be helming the 70-member ensemble in the three selections, featuring Schubert’s overture from Die Zauberharfe, D.644, Eybler’s Clarinet Concerto in B-flat Major, HV160 and Dvorak’s Symphony no.9 in E minor, Op. 95 in the performance ‘From The New World’.
The presentation will begin at 8pm.
“We chose the performance theme because the piece by Antonin Dvorak showcases the strings and the winds very well,” Ooi said at the performance rehearsal at The Star Pitt St. on Wednesday.
“Dvorak was born in Bohemia, the current Czech Republic. When he sailed to America, everyone was so excited to see the impact on the composer and how it would affect his music.
“It was then that he composed Symphony No. 9, which could be said to be one of the great romantic symphonies in America.”
Ooi was the founding Resident Conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra from 1998 until 2006.
The event will also see Raffaello Orlando, who has performed as a soloist in London, Europe and Asia, playing the clarinet as a soloist for the Eybler composition.
“Joseph Leopold Eybler, though obscure, was a very good friend of Mozart, who helped his friend through the end of his life,” Orlando said.
Tickets are sold from Dewan Sri Pinang, Bentley Music at Gurney Paragon Mall and Areca Books at The Star Pitt St for RM35 and RM50. Details, call Ramesh at 012-4854733.
