SEB offers 50 scholarships at local colleges, varsities

KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) is offering 50 scholarships this year to high-performing students with a good track record in extra-curricular activities.

The scholarships will cover funding for tuition and examination fees for tertiary level students in technical and non-technical courses at recognised colleges and universities in Malaysia.

“We encourage young Sarawakians who have done well academically in school and are also active in extra-curricular activities to apply,” SEB vice-president for people and leadership development Siti Aisah Adenan said.

She said SEB received over 100 applications when it introduced the external scholarship programme last year.

“Upon selection, 30 were granted scholarships totalling RM1.35mil. The applicants represented a good mix in technical and non-technical fields,” she said, adding that the response was expected to be even better this year.

The scholarship programme aims to complement the state government’s efforts to ensure sufficient local manpower for the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score).

“We are one of the biggest employers in the state with over 4,000 employees and the energy provider for Score, which is Sarawak’s main engine of growth.

“We started our scholarship programme internally before deciding that we would extend it to other deserving Sarawakians,” Siti Aisah said.

The programme supports diploma and degree courses in engineering, science and non-engineering fields.

The engineering and science category includes electrical power, mechanical engineering, hydrology, geology, environmental science and management, telecommunications and civil engineering.

Applicants for non-engineering fields can pursue courses in safety, law, quantity surveying, finance, accounting, internal audit, communications, information technology, human resources and arts, among others.

To be eligible, applicants must not be more than 21 years old at the time of applying, have secured an unconditional offer or admission letter from an approved higher learning institution in Malaysia, must not be a recipient of any other scholarship and whose siblings or family members have not received this scholarship.

Applicants who fulfil the requirements can apply for the scholarship at any stage of their higher education, be it matriculation, foundation, any semester or even the final year of their programme.

For application forms and more information, call the SEB/Sesco Training Centre at 082-309 428 or go to www.sarawakenergy.com.my/index.php/scholarship.

Completed forms must be submitted to the Manager, Competency Training Division, SEB/Sesco Training Centre, Jalan Belian, Sungai Biawak, 93450 Kuching.

The closing date is July 31. Shortlisted candidates will be called for interview by September.
