Blaze at rubber factory sends four firefighters to hospital

A RUBBER recycling factory near Taman Bukit Juru on the Penang mainland was destroyed during a fire.

Prai Fire and Rescue station chief A’azelan Hassan said it took them about 20 minutes to bring the flames under control during the incident at around 11pm on Tuesday.

“Almost 80% of the premises was destroyed.

“One of my men and three from the voluntary unit had to be rushed to the hospital after they nearly passed out due to the flames,” he said.

A’azelan said nobody was injured during the incident as the factory was closed when the fire broke out.

“A total of 70 personnel and 20 fire trucks were involved in the rescue operation.

“We received a distress call at 11.10pm and reached the scene around 10 minutes later.

“The fire was put out at 12.20am,” he said.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Fire and Rescue Department’s forensic unit.
