A RAMADAN bazaar trader in Alor Setar is enjoying a roaring business, thanks to Jackie Chan.
No, the Hong Kong superstar has not been to Mohd Ashraf Hashim’s kebab stall at the Taman Wira Mergong Ramadan bazaar nor has he endorsed the product.
He is featured in the promotional banner put up at the stall by Ashraf.
The move has paid off for Ashraf as his kebabs are well-received and have become famous to the extent that the locals are calling them ‘Kebab Kungfu’ and ‘Kebab Jackie’.
“If you ask for ‘Kebab Kungfu’, traders at the bazaar will direct you to my stall,” said Ashraf who first put up the banner during the Ramadan bazaar last year.
Ashraf, 22, has been a fan of Chan since his schooldays and decided to put up the banner featuring the superstar as he wanted to make his kebabs famous.
“He is my idol. I like to watch him in action in his movies and I also like his jokes,” said Ashraf.
“I have watched all the Jackie Chan movies from the traditional kungfu ones to those with modern themes such as ‘Rush Hour’ and ‘Police Story’.
“For me, he is the best actor in action movies,” he said.
Ashraf said if Chan were to come to know about his kebabs and visit his stall, he would make him a “very special piece” of Kebab Jackie.
He, however, felt that his dream of meeting his idol would remain distant.
Ashraf’s idolising of Chan has led to many people asking him if he knew kungfu.
“I told them no,” said the trader who sells his kebabs at RM3 each.
His stall is open from 4pm to 7.15pm.
