Bon Appetit restaurant in KDU College Penang provides the ideal training ground to prepare students to be industry-ready.

THE culinary arts are in the spotlight these days, thanks to the rising popularity of reality cooking shows.

In pursuing this career, choosing the right educational institution is crucial to getting an edge in this competitive industry.

KDU College Penang’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) is one of the pioneers in the northern region in providing top hospitality and culinary arts education.

The school has produced industry-ready graduates with 90% graduate employability rate for the past 24 years, with a solid programme that is both practical and academically sound.

Through a partnership with IMI University Centre in Lucerne, Switzerland in 1997, KDU College became the first private college to offer students a dual-award programme for a Swiss diploma in hospitality and culinary arts.

This provides students with the opportunity to obtain prestigious Swiss qualifications without having to go abroad.

Students also get exposure to real-life situations through industry placement in reputable local or international hotels and restaurants, enabling them to gain valuable real world experience.

Included in its list of industry-relevant programmes are the IMI Bachelor of Arts in International Hotel and Tourism Management (3+0), IMI Diploma in International Hotel and Tourism Management, KDU-IMI Diploma in Professional Chef Training and KDU-CAI Certificate in Baking or Pastry.

Testament to its successful teaching pedagogy, KDU College’s SHTCA students are repeat award-winners at culinary competitions locally and aboard.

At the recent 6th Vietnam Culinary Challenge 2015, the team won 21 awards including the coveted Best Culinary Establishment Award 2015.

At KDU College, the true potential of its students is unleashed through practical simulations, outcome-based learning and experimental learning initiatives.

Students benefit from real-world teaching in its well-equipped training facilities such as the KDU-Holiday Inn Hospitality Training Suite, Bon Appetit training restaurant, Bar 91 café and professional commercial kitchens which include patisserie and butchery demo kitchens.

Led by a dedicated, professional team of lecturers and chefs, the teaching staff at KDU College create enriching and unique learning experiences for students to effectively groom them for the working world.

In addition to academics, campus life here is constantly abuzz with exciting activities throughout the year.

From organising community services to Penang heritage tours to the annual Power Chef Competition, students enrich their learning experiences with a myriad of out-of-classroom events.

KDU’s SHTCA will be organising a Swiss Open Day at its campus in Jalan Anson on June 27.
