BATU PAHAT: Two cousins died when a Toyota Vios they were travelling in crashed into a trailer at KM113.6 along the North-South Expressway here.
Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Din Ahmad said both vehicles were heading south on the highway between Pagoh and Yong Peng.
He added that the incident occurred at around 9.55am on May 8 when the Vios rammed into the back of the lorry.
ACP Din said the victims have been identified as driver Mohammad Nawawi Zulkifli, aged 22, from Kajang, Selangor and his passenger, Nurul Jannah Osman, aged 28, from Kuala Ketil, Kedah.
“The lorry was believed to be having some engine problems which caused it to slow down on the emergency lane to avoid any traffic congestion.
“However, the car then entered the same lane before it lost control and crashed into the back of the lorry,” he said adding that there were no brake marks at the scene.
ACP Din pointed out that the car might have been speeding on the emergency lane and could not stop in time to avoid the trailer.
He added that the two victims died at the scene due to heavy injuries they sustained from the impact while the lorry driver escaped unhurt.
ACP Din also said the two bodies have been sent to the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital for a post-mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
He said initial investigations showed that there was good weather and no traffic slowdown prior to the incident.
ACP Din urged witnesses to the incident to contact the state police hotline at 07-221 2999.
