SIBU: A total of 1,067 pirated Iban song CDs and VCDs worth RM5,000 were confiscated by the Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry during a surprise raid.
The raid was conducted on VCD shops in the night market area on Monday following complaints from the public and the Dayak Music Association on the rampant selling of pirated albums.
The ministry chief for Sibu, Abdul Hafidz Abdul Rahim, said the raid conducted by eight enforcement officers from the department in Sibu, Bintulu and Kuching was carried out in conjunction with the coming Gawai Dayak celebration.
“It is this time of the year when the irresponsible ones will be taking the opportunity to sell pirated Iban song CDs and VCDs,” he said.
Those caught selling the items, he said, would be brought to court to face charges where they could be fined up to RM2,000 for every piece seized.
He said the ministry would work closely with the association in the investigation so as to bring the culprits to justice.
“We will intensify our operation statewide by conducting raids at night markets and VCD shops,” he added.
In giving warning to sellers of pirated software, Abdul Hafidz said his ministry would not hesitate to take stern action against them to protect the interest of those in the industry.
