PENANG hawkers are paying less than the national average trade tariff for water supply.
Penang Water Supply Corpora-tion Sdn Bhd (PBAPP) chief executive officer Jaseni Maidinsa said it was wrong to claim that hawkers in the state “are treated unfairly.”
“They pay less than the construction sector.
“As trade consumers, Penang hawkers pay an average trade tariff of RM1.36 per 1,000 litres for the first 500,000 litres of water per month, compared to the national average of RM1.45.
“Trade consumers in Kedah, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Perak, Malacca, Selangor and Johor as well as Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur pay between RM1.40 and RM2.93 for the first 500,000 litres per month.
“The construction sector consumers in Penang pay RM1.95 per 1,000 litres, which is RM0.59 more than that for hawkers,” he said in a press statement.
He was rebutting allegations reported by a Chinese daily that Penang hawkers were being “burdened” with water tariffs and “treated unfairly” compared to the construction sector.
“These allegations are wrong and misleading,” he said.
