MIRI: Human rights organisations and environmental groups in Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur have blasted the Sarawak government’s decision to go ahead with the construction of the mega Baram Dam in northern Sarawak as the project will uproot more than 20,000 people and drown huge traits of forests.
Jaringan Orang Asal SeMalaysia (JOAS), based in Kuala Lumpur, and Miri-based Save Sarawak Rivers yesterday slammed the manner in which Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem had given the green light to Sarawak Energy Bhd to proceed with preparations for ground construction at the project site located between Long Kesseh and Long Naah, some 200km inland from Miri.
