Hazardous Pan Borneo Highway stretch claims three lives

Bad wreck: Firemen removing the bodies from the crash vehicle near the house.

MIRI: A truck laden with fertiliser collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle along the Bintulu to Miri stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway, killing all three people inside the Ford Ranger.

In what is the fourth fatal accident along that portion of the highway within a month, the 4WD vehicle and the truck collided at such a force that the mangled wreck smashed into a house located next to the highway.

Luckily the house occupants were not in at the 5.47am incident along KM77, not far from the Samalaju Industrial Estate and about an hour away from Bintulu town.

The Fire and Rescue Department personnel rushed to the scene from the Bintulu and Samalaju stations after receiving an alert from the public.

Kidurong state assemblyman Chiew Ching Sing said the police confirmed that all three victims trapped inside the 4WD vehicle died at the scene.

“The Fire and Rescue personnel had to cut through the wreck to retrieve the bodies.

“They were from Batu Niah town.

“The impact of the collision was so forceful that both vehicles flung into a house.

“Luckily no one was at home,” he said.

Chiew said the incident was one of many along this stretch of the highway.

He said traffic had surged to a high level due to rise in passenger and commercial vehicles.

He urged the government to hasten upgrading the highway.
