Harmony in royal town

Nice environment: Kuala Kangsar quiet and serene on the enthronement day of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.

HER favourite subject is Guo yu or Bahasa Malaysia and she attends a Chinese primary school.

Nur Ridiyani Mohd Nor Azmi, nine, from SJKC Chung Hwa in Kuala Kangsar is a Malaysian whom the country can be proud of.

She said her ambition is to become a doctor.

Her father Mohd Nor Azmi Mat Nusi, 30, spoke about his daughter’s ambition when met at his stall along Jalan Dato Sagor yesterday.

His wife Mazni Mohd Noh, 30, said she learned about the advantages of knowing Chinese from her Chinese employer when working at a furniture shop earlier.

She said she and her husband were prepared to work hard to give their three daughters a good education.

They said they woke up 4am to make kuih, prepare their children for school and also to set up their stall.

They said they sent their two elder girls to a Chinese kindergarten for two years to prepare them for the Chinese school.

Mazni said Nur Ridiyani also attends tuition classes for four subjects, costing RM80 a month.

Their second daughter Nur Ridiyana, seven, also goes to the same school while Nur Ridin Atiqah is only three years old.

The proud parents said they also learnt Chinese from their daughters.

For an Indian family who runs an electrical shop along Jalan Kangsar, they said the royal town is truly 1Malaysia.

“About 95% of our customers are Malays,” said Helen Mary Gynapiragasam, 56.

She said the shop, which was set up by her father-in-law in 1957, is now run by her children.

Her husband Mariadass Ratinum, 62, was also all praise for the royal town and proud to note that his shop is among many shops along the street which are run by the third generation now.

“We all love this.place,” he said.

His daughter Renita Lisa Mariadass, 34, said she and her husband Thyagarajan Suhumah, 34, who is from Johor Baru, decided to settle down in Kuala Kangsar.

Thyagarajan is a police personnel.

“This place is wonderful to live in,” she said.

The family, who were busy serving their customers and watching the enthronement of Perak Sultan Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah telecast live over RTM, are a picture of bliss.
