PENANGITES together with DAP and state leaders took time off to pay tribute to the late DAP chairman Karpal Singh on the first anniversary of his death.
The atmosphere at Karpal Singh Drive in Penang was a solemn one as several well-known DAP figures took to the stage and shared their fond memories of the ‘Tiger of Jelutong’.
Three wreaths were laid at the bottom of a banner bearing Karpal’s images which was erected at the site before the crowd bowed in front of it as a mark of respect recently.
His son Jagdeep Singh Deo, who is also a state executive councillor, conveyed his gratitude to the state government and DAP for holding several events in remembrance of his late father.
He proposed that the four pillars located in Karpal Singh Drive be known as Courage, Strength, Hope and Principles as they were the elements that Karpal lived by.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Karpal frequently told him to look forward and carry on.
“All of us need to carry on now but at the same time, we all should never give up or lose hope and keep up the fighting spirit,” he said, adding that Jagdeep’s proposal would be given due consideration after getting permission from the artist who designed the pillars.
Before the event started, more than 300 cyclists took part in a ‘10km Ride With Karpal Singh’ cycling event from All Seasons Place in Bandar Baru Air Itam to Karpal Singh Drive.
Also present at the ceremony were Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang, DAP adviser Dr Chen Man Hin, Karpal’s wife Gurmit Kaur and children besides several state executive councillors and DAP members.
