SMJK(C) Keat Hwa marching band has received a cash aid of RM100,000 from the Kedah government to perform in the 32nd Shanghai Spring International Music Festival 2015.
The team is not only representing Kedah but it is also the sole team representing Malaysia after being invited to perform in the festival.
A group of 132 people, including the 101-member band, would perform alongside other school marching bands, musical groups, singers and performers from various countries during the festival in Shanghai from Monday till May 5.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said he had approved only RM20,000 when the school applied for funding.
“When I learnt from MCA and Gerakan leaders here that the team is actually representing Malaysia, I quickly got four state-owned companies to fork out RM20,000 each.
“I hope the RM100,000 will help the band to excel and make Kedah and Malaysia proud,” he said in his speech when presenting the aid to principal Yeoh Chui Seang at the school in Jalan Kuala Kedah, Alor Setar recently.
The marching band also gave Mukhriz a treat with a stunning performance.
The band coach Tang Chia Hoe, 43, said this was the second time the school was invited to perform in the festival. The first time was in 2011.
“We’ve chosen the theme Spain for our seven-minute performance. There will be three songs — Matador, Flamenco Dance and Flamenco Closer — and there will also be three formations that comprise 98 formation drills.”
The school marching band has carved its name nationally and internationally by winning numerous prestigious competitions.
In 2011, the school received RM50,000 from the state government then helmed by former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak to participate in a music festival in China.
