AFTER 14 weeks, 50 videos, 10 finalists and a two-day bootcamp, 30-year-old Jamie Tan has been crowned the winner of L’Oreal Paris The Brush Contest Malaysia.

Her Color Clash creation video impressed the panel of judges made up of L’Oréal Consumer Products Division general manager Darren Ho, professional makeup artist Geraldine Loy, TV host and celebrity Megan Tan, YouTuber and producer Joseph Germani and Tongue In Chic editor-in-chief Emma Chong Johnston and won her an opportunity to represent Malaysia in the International Grand Finale of The Brush Contest in Cannes, France next month.

Tan developed an interest in makeup early as she used to experiment with her mother’s cosmetics as a preschooler. Besides doing her own makeup, her favourite past-time included experimenting with colours and trying different looks on her sister and friends.

“It’s been really fun playing with all the colours, because to me, a face is like an empty canvas – a little colour here and there does make a lot of difference,” said the Malaysia Airlines business analyst at a recent media gathering by L’Oreal Paris in Le Meridien Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Tan also learnt how to apply makeup by referring to online makeup tutorials. Her earlier works were mostly inspired by beauty and style vlogger Xteener, makeup demonstrator Michelle Phan and model Lily Aldridge.

After five years of working as a business analyst in the aviation industry, Jamie finally enrolled in a professional makeup course at the Amber Chia Academy in 2012.

For two years, she attended night classes twice a week before she graduated from the course in 2014.

She has been working as a freelance makeup artist and conducting basic makeup training during her free time.

Winning the L’Oreal Paris The Brush Contest Malaysia has brought Jamie one step closer to achieving her dream of becoming a professional make-up artist.

“As unbelievable as it seems, it has been an amazing experience for me so far.

“All the time spent doing makeup on myself and my friends has finally paid off!”

Jamie will battle it out in the grand finale against winners from other participating countries for the ultimate grand prize — a €100,000 (RM392,498) one-year contract with L’Oreal Paris Makeup Designer Team.

The grand finale will be held in Cannes, France, hosted by L’Oreal Paris spokesman and Woman of Worth, Eva Longoria.

The video of the event will be on YouTube on June 11.
