WITH investments reaching RM1.7bil, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) has placed Perak on the 10th position.
International Trade and Industry (MITI) minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong said the amount was for the investment of 26 projects in the state.
He said since 2010, Perak had attracted 208 projects into the state, with investments reaching RM10.4bil.
Lee said among the key investments were Toyo Tyre Malaysia, Sinetimed Consumables, China Southern Railway and Vale.
“I believe with the strength and the potential, the ministry together with the state Economic Planning Unit can work towards greater heights for the benefit of the state.
“We must ensure that the prestige of entrepreneurs in the state is raised to a higher level, for them to continue contributing and enhancing the economy of the state,” he said in his speech after launching an outreach programme organised by the ministry at a hotel in Ipoh last Friday.
The programme is part of MITI’s ongoing efforts to inform the local business community of the various policies, promotional activities, and incentives made available by the ministry and its agencies.
About 200 participants, including exporters, members of business associations and entrepreneurs attended the seminar.
Present were MITI’s Perak director Nazrul Izwan Ismail, and the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry Perak branch chairman Datuk Lim Si Boon.
Lee said under the ministry’s agency, Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade), a total of 619 companies in Perak have registered, and were benefiting from the services offered, which include business matching with foreign investors.
“Development grants over RM2.23mil have been handed by Matrade to 112 companies in Perak last year.
“Until April 6 this year, over RM600,000 worth of grants have been released to 37 companies in the state,” he added.
Lee said with such outreach programmes, the ministry would be able understand the needs and problems faced by the industry, especially by the small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
“Until March, easy loans schemes for SMEs offered through SME Corp have benefited 157 applicants in Perak worth RM11.29mil.
“Besides that 2,051 applications for grants worth RM176mil have been approved for SMEs in the state,” he added.
