MIRI: A long-distance interdivisional express bus went out of control along the Pan Borneo Highway while travelling from Miri City to Bintulu town yesterday and plunged into a field.
The driver died at the scene after he was trapped when the bus landed on its side.
Eight passengers – five men and three women – sustained injuries in the 9.15am accident and were sent to the Miri Hospital.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel managed to extract the body of the trapped driver after an hour.
The injured passengers were given first aid at the scene before being sent to the hospital.
This is the third fatal accident along the Miri-Bintulu stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway over the past week.
Four days ago, a fertiliser truck rammed into a house near Bintulu town and killed a five-year-old boy and injured three others.
The next day another fertiliser truck went out of control near Bintulu town before plunging into a ravine, killing the driver and a passenger.
It is still not clear how and why the express bus overshot the highway yesterday.
That section of the highway, especially near Bukit Song, is notorious for fatal accidents involving buses, cars and lorries.
