Cops hunting van driver who rammed into patrol car

POLICE are looking for the driver of a stolen white Nissan Vanette van who fled after purposely crashing into a police patrol car several times in Butterworth, Penang.

OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said two policemen on their crime prevention rounds spotted the van driver behaving in a suspicious manner and gave chase at about 6am yesterday.

“The van was in front of the police patrol car and when my personnel tried to overtake it, the driver panicked and crashed into the patrol car and sped off.

“The policemen gave chase and the driver crashed into the police car again. One of the policemen then opened fire at the driver to prevent him from crashing into them again.

“The shot missed and the van sped off. After a while, the driver again collided into the police car which caused it to crash into the wall of a house,” he told a press conference yesterday.

ACP Abdul Rahman said the dri-ver also lost control of the van and hit a car parked by the roadside.

The driver fled the scene on foot, he said, adding that the driver of the police car sustained injuries to his left hand while his colleague fractured his left hand.

“We have classified the case as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code. Our probe showed that the van was reported stolen on the island in February.”
