THE Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang and the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia Penang Branch will be organising the 13th annual Vasakhi Fest 2015 at Penang Times Square on Saturday.

The event will be held from 6pm to 11pm.

State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the event was not held last year because of the passing of his father, Karpal Singh on April 17.

“This year’s open house will be in the memory of my father, the Tiger of Jelutong.

“The objective of this event is to enhance awareness of the Sikh culture while promoting Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage and racial unity,” he said.

He added that the first open house was organised by the state government in 2003 and has since been a state-level event.

Among the highlights are vibrant cultural performances like bhangra, giddha, multi-cultural performances, henna art and the art of making the ‘Punjabi bed’.

Authentic vegetarian Punjabi food will be served free to the public.

Vasakhi marks the anniversary of the establishment of the Order of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.

It is also the day when Sikh men are given the surname Singh and women the surname Kaur to erase all class and caste distinctions among the faithful.
