Levy on hotel rooms to be used to promote island to international airlines

THE local government fee that tourists pay when they check into Penang hotels will be used mainly to encourage airlines to make direct international flights to the state.

The fund, which has grown to RM5.5 million as of last month, will be used to subsidise the airlines’ cost such as aircraft parking charges and air bridge fees at the Penang International Airport, said state Tourism Committee chairman Danny Law.
