CHOOSE rechargeable batteries and recycle them when they can no longer be used; reuse and recycle bottles and borrow a book from a friend or a library.

This was the advice from nine-year-old S. Senttinee who was speaking on environmental issues at the Penang Green Idol 2015 (Public Speaking Competition) at Komtar.

Senttinee said that the public must not litter as garbage that was not swept often got washed into the drains and ended up in rivers which flowed into the sea.

“That causes water pollution that affects all sea creatures and wildlife,” she added.

She was among 80 participants who took part in the competition.

The event saw three categories of competitors — Category A (nine to 12 years old), Category B (15 to 17 years old) and Category C (18 to 25 years old).

Each contestant was given three minutes to speak in either Bahasa Malaysia or English, for the audition.

Ten participants from each category were shortlisted to compete in the semi-finals, which will be held at the Straits Quay Retail Marina on April 25.

Five contestants from each category will then be selected to compete in the finals on June 14 at the 1st Avenue in Penang.

Participants stand a chance to win total cash prizes up to RM9,600.
