THE Sri Tanjung Voluntary Fire and Rescue Association will be the first in Penang to have a green building for its volunteer firefighters when it is completed by the end of the year.
Association chairman Ooi Hock Keong said the two-and-a-half-storey building near Chew Jetty at Weld Quay would help the volunteer firefighters to manage their operations in a more effective manner.
“The building will have environment- friendly features such as a good ventilation system and a lot of openings to cool the building.
“There will also be a viewing dock with lots of greenery.
“This is in line with the state government’s efforts to have clean and green buildings in the heritage enclave,” he told a press conference recently.
He said the building would cost RM480,000 and the association had raised RM180,000 so far.
Ooi added that the balance would be raised through several fundraising projects this year.
“It is a small building but it will be able to accommodate two fire engines and all the firefighting equipment which is presently stored in the members’ houses.
“There are also plans to extend the building later as the space will be inadequate a few years down the road,” he said.
