LAWYERS have to strive without fear or favour in order to continue to be respected in the legal profession, said the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.
According to him, the credibility, dignity and integrity of lawyers would be questioned if the roles and responsibilities entrusted to them were not implemented sincerely and honestly.
“Lawyers should be mindful of their role in administering justice,” he said.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said this after consenting to an audience with the chairman and committee members of the Perlis Bar Committee for the 2015/2016 term at a VIP room in a Seafood Complex in Kuala Perlis recently.
Also present was Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.
The royal couple were received by the committee chairman Ahmad Zaini Samsudin, Malaysian Bar Council state representative Siti Hajar Ahmad and members of the Perlis Bar Committee.
According to Tuanku Syed Faizuddin, the behaviour of lawyers is always observed because other than representing their clients they are officers of the court who have a special role especially in decision-making.
“The justice system cannot be enforced without sincere commitment from each member, either the judiciary or the Bar which supports the Sovereignty of the Law.
“Therefore, the Bar must be strong and independent and take a firm stand for the progress and development of society which can only be achieved in tandem with economic development, the existence of appropriate laws and with an unflawed judicial system,” said Tuanku Syed Faizuddin.
The committee, which was established on March 14, 2013, has 60 members. However, only 38 people are practising lawyers in Perlis.
Later, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin and Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen consented to cutting a cake in conjunction with the second anniversary of the Perlis Bar Commitee. — Bernama
