Association to create awareness on good mental health

SIBU: Sibu Mental Health Association (SMHA) will continue to create awareness among the public on the importance of having good mental health.

Its president, councillor So Teck Kee said it was only with a healthy mental health that a person could lead a life which are more orderly and meaningful.

He said this at SMHA’s Family Link Education? programme on Saturday. The event was jointly organised with Hin Hua Poh Sen Association (HHPSA) and Department of Psychiatric & Mental Health (DPMH), Sibu Hospital.

The programme was conducted by four medical doctors, namely, Dr Daniel Wong, Dr Josephine Tiong, Dr Chin Lie Joo and Dr Wong Siong Teck.

Topics presented by them included “Understand Mental Illness -Who can understand me?” “Understanding & Recognition of Psychotropic Education”. “Handling crisis - Re-socialize & organising daily living,” The Myth of recovery and its Hope; “Rights & Advocacy” and “Put knowledge into practice”.

Having good mental health augurs well for the development of family, society and nation as a whole,” he enthused.

So, who is also the president of HHPSA said the programme was aimed at creating awareness among the public, especially those whose family members are suffering from suspected mental illness and the pathway of recovery.

He said family should bring out those members suspected with mental problem for socio interaction with others instead of confining them at home which would worsen their situation.

“They should be brought out to merge into society life which will help to alleviate the mental state of their condition be it from stress or others,” he said.

He hoped other NGOs would also come forward in togetherness to help the unfortunate group of people in concerted efforts to create a caring society.

Guest-of-honour, Nee See Kiong, who is the HHPSA?s Culture & Education Head also emphasised on the importance of mental health in order to live a rewarding and meaningful life.

Director of Sibu Hospital, Dr Ngian Hie Ung was also present as special guest.
