SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) is now recruiting foreign students especially from China after it has been given the greenlight by the Education Ministry to do so.
Vice-chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Abdul Hakim Juri told a press conference yesterday that the approval was just been granted by the ministry recently.
He said following that the Home Ministry had also approved the applying for student’s visa to study at the university.
“Our target is to recruit 150 students for the first two years. We are targeting students from China, Kalimantan in Indonesia, Brunei and India.
“We are confident that we can achieve the target based on the support from Sibu Municipal Council who has established the Friendship City concept with cities in China especially the Fuzhou Province,” he said.
He said the university had already done its marketing drive in Brunei and Indonesia while a team each would soon go to China and India for similar purpose.
“We hope the community here will accept this foreign students when they are here. It will also be good as they bring along with them their different cultural background,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Abdul Hakim said they are welcoming SPM, STPM including Chinese school certificate holders and their parents to its open day on April 11 and 12.
The university currently has 680 students and it hopes to have 1,000 by end of this year.
The open day is to recruit students for the Foundation programmes and the 11 degrees which it is offering.
“We will unveil Sarawak born multi-award singer, Hafiz Suip as our brand ambassador on April 11 and another two brand ambassadors, Nick and Stella Chung the next day,” he added.
“We hope to recruit 400 new students during the open day for our April intake. The other intake is in September,” he said.
