Petrosains, The Discovery Centre celebrated World Science Centre Day for the first time in conjunction with Pi Day at Level 4, Suria KLCC recently.
The World Science Centre Day was an idea mooted by the chief executive officers of science centres worldwide in 2013 to promote and sustain public interest in science centres all over the world and emphasise the importance of science centres as a platform to promote science and instil a passion for learning in the community.
There are 3,000 science centres all over the world and they have reached and engaged more than 310 million visitors thus far.
Pi Day is a day to commemorate the mathematical constant (pi) on every March 14.
The significance of March 14 this year is even greater than any other year as the date contained all the first five digits of pi which is 3.1415.
Some of the activities organised at other science centres and museums worldwide are forum and discussion sessions, pi-related shows and demonstrations, pi giveaways and talks by prominent scientists on the significance of pi.
“Petrosains is excited to join the World Science Centre Day celebration for the first time together with other science centres and museums like the Singapore Science Centre, Hong Kong Science Museum and The Mind Museum in Philippines.
“We have lined up many engaging and exciting activities for our visitors with the aim of getting the general public interested in mathematics and to commemorate such an important mathematical number or constant,”said Petrosains Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Tengku Nasariah Tengku Syed Ibrahim.
Visitors who visited Petrosains on that day were given a 15% discount on admission tickets and mystery gifts were given to lucky visitors who purchased Petrosains admission tickets at 3.14pm (the number for pi).
Mathematics and pi-related science shows were conducted throughout the day and a surprise in the form of mini pies was distributed to visitors during the 3.14pm science show at Petrosains.
