THE Penang Hindu Endowment Board, two state assemblymen and a Member of Parliament (MP) have raised RM15,000 to help paralysed accident victim S. Nathankumar undergo a spinal surgery.

Nathankumar, 28, is a hit-and-run accident victim who needs RM45,000 to undergo the surgery. His plight was highlighted in The Star on March 18.

At a press conference in Komtar yesterday, Deputy Chief Minister II and Penang Hindu Endowment Board chairman Dr P. Ramasamy said RM10,000 of the RM15,000 was raised by the board.

“The remaining RM5,000 was raised by assemblymen Jagdeep Singh Deo (Datuk Keramat), R.S.N. Rayer (Seri Delima), and Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh,” he said.

He then presented both cheques to Nathankumar’s wife, K. Daivaanai and her sister-in-law, N. Saraswathy.

Speaking to The Star later, Daivaanai said she was touched with the kindness shown by the board, state assemblymen, Ramkarpal and the public.

“I’ve received calls from people living in London, Indonesia and Singapore, who wanted to donate for my husband’s operation. I’m really thankful for their help.

“Right now, I’m praying hard that the operation will be successful,” she said.

Penang Hindu Association (PHA) deputy president P. Murugiah said the association has also raised RM25,500 so far, for the cost of the

“We thank the five lawmakers and the public for their contributions. As the family resides in Kedah, we hope that the Kedah state government and the Welfare Department will also come forward to assist the family.

“This is vital especially after the operation because the doctors say Nathankumar will be wheelchair-bound. The family needs help to survive the loss of income.

“He will also need a medical bed, wheelchair and adult diapers,” he said, adding that the association was also planning to set up funds to aid the family.

Donors can forward their cheques made payable to the Penang Hindu Association (write the victim’s name behind the cheque) and post them to the PHA at 9-3-1, Bukit Awana Condo, Jalan Bukit Kukus, Paya Terubong, 11060 Air Itam, Penang.

They can also bank in donations to Maybank (account no. 507077412046) under the PHA.
