Four foreigners rescued after drifting at sea for a day

KUANTAN: Four foreigners who went on an island hopping trip in Tioman Island were found after reportedly missing for a day.

The four were rescued by staff of a resort near Tiger Reef in Pulau Tulai at about 9.55am on Thursday.

They were Gull Britt Carina Almgren, 63, Solvieg Maria Nystrom, 62, both from Sweden, Michael Rink, 26, and Silke Volkhemer, 38, both from Germany.

Together with them was the boat’s skipper Sabahan Ishak Baharudin, 42.

Pahang Deputy CPO Deputy Comm Datuk Fatimah Ghazali said all five people were not hurt but tired and dehydrated.

DCP Fatimah said they were in a 40hp Yamaha fiber boat which malfunctioned as the propellor suddenly fell off.

“The five boarded the boat on an island hopping trip early in the morning but failed to return to the base.

“A missing person’s report was lodged later in the evening by the boat operator,” she said, adding that an operation was mounted by Rompin police with the assistance of local villagers.

DCP Fatimah said a diver spotted the five in the stationary boat on the following day before alerting the authorities.

She said police then contacted a nearby resort operator in Pulau Tulai, who deployed its staff to help tow the boat to Kampung Tekek.

“All five of them were sent to the Kampung Tekek clinic for check-up and observation.

“The foreigners were scheduled to return to their country after completing their holiday in the popular island,” she said.

DCP Fatimah said the operation was called off after the foreigners were found and rescued.
