Tapping potential of design students

Sail away in style: The highlight of this year’s Mercedes-Benz Stylo FGP 2015 is the inclusion of the lifestyle concept boat, Stylo II, by Stylo International subsidiary, Reissiger Marine, as part of a fashion exhibition.

THE Mercedes-Benz Stylo Fashion Grand Prix 2015 (MBSTYLOFGP 2015) is returning for its eighth edition, with an Autumn/Winter 2015 collection themed “Fashion Anarchy”.

Running from March 25 to 28, the fashion festival will open on the 25th at the Red Carpet Avenue, Encorp Strand Mall in Kota Damansara, which will be transformed complete with a giant marquee in Stylo’s signature look. It will house the runway shows, after-parties and public exhibitions during the festival.

During a recent press conference, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia president and chief executive officer Roland Folger and Stylo International president and chief executive officer Datuk Nancy Yeoh as well as sponsors inked their collaborations in an agreement-signing ceremony.

“Mercedes-Benz as a purveyor of fashion has always encouraged and nurtured young talents but with Stylo International as our partner, we have achieved much success in doing so since the inception of FGP (Fashion Grand Prix),” said Folger, adding that the auto marque was happy to continue to cultivate young designers with the potential to be on par with international designers around the world.

The event also saw Malaysian designer Datuk Zang Toi being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of his fashion label, House of Toi.

The 12 semi-finalists for the Emerging Designers Competition 2015 were also announced.

Comprising students from leading fashion schools in Malaysia, the annual competition will be held on March 26.

Incepted in 2010, the competition has produced a string of young creative designers, with past winners having had the opportunity to travel the world with Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s World Fashion Exchange with Stylo three years ago that resulted in the winners getting a chance to showcase their work at the fashion weeks in Mexico City and Prague.

This year’s winners will be announced during the Gala Night at FGP, supported with prize money from MyCreative Ventures, a government investment arm to spur Malaysia’s creative industry, and a platform to create and showcase their first collection at the Malaysia Fashion Week 2015 later this year.

The opening night will set the tone for the event, with non-conforming fashion shows such as punk, goth, bikers, chains, leather and tattoos featuring models and muses handpicked by designers for the night — Joyce Wong, Kinslager, Illiza Ho, Azlan Adrian Ariff (AAA), Tangoo, Fairuz Ramdan, Bon Zainal and Hazree Wahid, with each designer showcasing an individual interpretation of Rebel Revolution, the theme for the opening night.

The annual Mercedes-Benz Gala and Awards night on March 27 will feature Toi’s “Mystique of Venice,” which was showcased at the recent New York Fashion Week.

The MBSTYLOFGP 2015 will close the week with a fashion showcase by Bon Zainal and Joe Chia at Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Party at the Simfoni Lake, KLCC Park.

Two boats under Reissiger Marine, a subsidiary of Stylo International and its maritime event partner set up to handle boat shows, maritime events and boat trading, will be unveiled at the MBSTYLOFGP 2015.

The event will also showcase a classic motorcycle, the first generation Honda C70 by Boon Siew and an original tricycle by Bridgestone.

The MBSTYLOFGP 2015 is a run-up to the Petronas Formula One Grand Prix.
