Heritage in danger

Street of memories: Wong has been operating his hardware store in Lorong Cheapside for more than 40 years. The business was started by his grandfather.

FAMED for its stalls selling hardware and household items, Lorong Cheapside, off Chulia Street in George Town, may soon lose its charm because the traders are facing eviction from their homes.

The tenants of a row of six double-storey pre-war shophouses in the lane, one of the few remaining residential neighbourhoods in the inner city, have been issued with eviction notices by the building’s owner who plans to sell the property.
