More challenging hike this year

THE Penang Hill Heritage Forest Challenge will feature a longer route this year.

The distance will be 14km compared with 11km in the inaugural event last year.

The event on March 22 will be flagged off at 7am from the Penang Botanic Garden’s Quarry Park and end atop Penang Hill, according to Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) marketing and promotion assistant manager K. Janani.

She said PHC decided to make the route longer as the participants last year stated that 11km was not challenging enough.

“There will be four checkpoints and two water stations along the route,” she told a press conference at the Penang Hill funicular train’s bottom station on Thursday.

“Paramedics and ambulances will be on standby.”

Janani said PHC was organising the event with the collaboration of the Penang Amateur Athlete Association, Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng, Penang Hill Community Security and Development Committee, and the Penang Hill Residents Association.

“Participants who complete the hike will be given a certificate and be eligible for a lucky draw offering prizes such as a motorcycle and electronic appliances,” she said.

Janani said PHC was approaching schools, companies, colleges and hiking groups to take part in the event.

The event is divided into six categories: Junior Female (13 to 17 years), Junior Male (13-17 years), Open Female (18-44 years), Open Male (18-44 years), Veteran Female (45 years and above) and Veteran Male (45 years and above).

The top three finishers in each category will take home cash prizes of RM1,500, RM1,000 and RM500 respectively while finishers in fourth to sixth places in all the categories will receive RM300.

An additional RM1,000 will be given to the first Malaysian to complete the hike in the Open and Veteran Categories.

The entry fee for the junior categories is RM20 for both Malaysians and foreigners while it is RM30 for Malaysians and RM50 for foreigners in the other categories.

Participants in groups of 10 or more will get a 10% discount for each member of the group.

Registration forms are available at the PHC office at the bottom station of Penang Hill, the Penang Municipal Council information counter on Komtar’s 3rd floor and Penang Development Corporation in Bayan Baru.

The public can also register online at

Entries close on March 20.
