IT’S RM5 to any destination within Penang island. That’s the fare when you book a taxi via the MyTeksi app.
MyTeksi Penang city manager Loh Ji Yuan said the flat rate offer would be valid until March 31.
He said MyTeksi drivers would charge RM5 for sending you to the Penang International Airport, but were not allowed to pick up passengers there.
This is according to a Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) ruling that allows only airport limousines to take passengers at the airport.
“There is one MyTeksi driver to every three active taxi drivers in the state.
“There are over 3,000 taxi drivers in Penang including those inactive ones,” he said.
He added that the objective was to change the perception of the public that Penang taxi drivers are rude and tend to overcharge their customers.
“This offer is for all places within the island. It’s available 24 hours a day,” he said after launching the special promotion at Esplanade yesterday.
He added that the advantage of the app is it could help solve the haggling and bargaining problems.
“With this app, the rate is shown when you key in your current location and destination. And the rate of MyTeksi is usually 20% cheaper compared to the taxi station,” he said.
As a safety precaution, he said, MyTeksi’s customers would be able to view the driver’s registration number and photograph when they make the booking.
“Customers will be able to know who is picking them up. They can also share their ride details with their family and friends,” he said.
Loh said the response of the promotion should be good, thus the waiting time could be longer.
Taxi driver of eight years Abdul Rahim Abdullah, 60, said all his customers who booked their taxi through the app were happy as the programme was convenient and reliable.
“It’s easy for both customers and drivers as we can see the bookings coming in via the app and decide whether to accept it or not depending on our location,” he said.
He added that his business picked up after he registered as a MyTeksi member over a year ago.
“I can get up to 10 trips a day now compared to about five before,” he said.
